Project 2: The Great Cake

Hi there, this is my second project with Danielle Tishkun. Here in this project we worked on creating a character fit for a short story. We decided on a character based off of one of our Professor's creations in our first years here at CSU Chico. I created the character profiles (3/4 turns, perspective, front) as well as the character expression that would be needed to show the range of her emotions and personality. My partner created the beat sheet to block out what needed to be spaced out for us to arrange from our story. I created a story and she worked that into a script that we both used to scratch up a storyboard. I took the beat sheet and started sketch up shots for the storyboard and finessed the lines and shading. Danielle went to work on the Animatic adding motion to the picture where I ended by adding the proper sounds.

One of the problems we had was taking the story and making this into separate shots since I didn't want it to be too linear. Searching for ideals shot was a bit tedious, but after an hour of searching I was able to find good shots and sketched ideas to fit the narrative. There were other little issues with easy fixes. This was due to me sticking to an idea and not adding too much extra details at any point. I took the advice and criticism from the previous project and implemented onto this.

Synopsis:
This story is a bored out of her mind girl looking for something to do. She receives an invitation to her best friend's birthday party. Dollene decides to make a fantastic cake for her friend, but disaster wrecks it.

Animatic:

Problems for this for me was mainly finding the proper sounds to accompany the visuals. My favorite link is www.freesound.org for all my sound needs. The solution for this was picking /choosing what needed to be cut. The cutting and pitch changing of the audio was all done in Audacity and went pretty smoothly.

Storyboard:

The main problem here was trying to get consistency. It took a few days to devise a plan on this. The first day I sketched the rough drafts and fill in the linings to get the visuals flowing in a certain way. The next day, I filled in the colors tones just to get a feel of where things are. The solution I found to this was to plan on everything on a schedule and learn to take a rest.

Beat Board:

For this project, my partner and I split the work so she's the one who completed the beat sheet.

Character Modeling/Construction:

There was no issues with this part of the project, I had a good reference in one of my professors who gave me his input on her dimension.

Script:

The script was the hardest thing for me since I had no knowledge of how to properly do one. I had classmates advise me on how to proper create one and understanding what I did know how to do, I ended with this final result.

Story:

I pretty much had a story down from one of my class' assignment previously, so I used that as a template. The previous assignment was for making a story for an object and I just simply broadened the story to be bigger. Now filling in the in-between scenes was the difficult bit since I had many ideas I wanted to included. Yet, I restricted myself to be simpler thanks to the advising of my project partner.

I hope you enjoy our work!

Project 1: Endeavor

Hello there, in this first project we were to create a short story from scratch. We developed our our ideas into our very own characters. The process we took to develop our thoughts were to first create a model from our stories we've developed only on the stipulation that we keep out any thing living, so we had to narrow ideas into in-organics. We created the model of our character and drew them in various poses. When then created a beat sheet to get a general flow and idea to lead us to develop our scripts. After the script was thought out we then did a general storyboard and narrated to viewers of actions in our scenes.

A quick synopsis of my story tells of a brave robot braving dangers to warn a peaceful settlement of an impending threat, when he gets there his decision is the ultimate factor.

Animatic:
The problems I've had creating the animatic was figuring sources of sounds to use for my background and for ground noises. My other issue was from changing my first idea to one of no dialogue. The solution to this was just simply working with the sources I had. Some sounds were from clips on Youtube that I cut out and changed tempo and pitches. The solution for no dialogue was just moving on with out it and learning to use the sounds I had on hand to supplement for emotion in dialogue.

Storyboard:
The main issue I had with my storyboard I would say is try to convey the message to the audience. Some techniques that remedied this were using shots from manga to give me an idea of how to bring action shots to life in a sense. The second issue was to try to keep the storyboard short. My idea was a bit too ambitious for my current skill level and what I did to correct this was taking out some shots that could be combined with adjacent ones.

Beat Board:
The beat board was really rather simple to start, but the issue was not getting the images I wanted in terms of quality. My tablet was a bit buggy, and it wasn't until I was working on the storyboard the line were more defined.

Character Construction / Modeling:
The main issues when creating the construction would've be finding a suitable model to find my idea. What I was looking for wasn't really to simple or complex, but an in between. I combined a few reference ideas to get the image below.

Script:
My first issue was with starting off a script because I didn't really know how to convey my story into a script since I had many elements added it. I later realized the guidelines for this assignment was not supposed to have dialogue.

Story:
My story was rather simple to follow from development, but the main issue was not taking notes of what to add from between the five main shots. I had some good ideas, but never took those ideas down or went completely off tangent with other ideas. From here on out, I'll be more strict on staying to my idea and write down what works.

Problems and solutions:
The first issue I've noticed I keep on biting more than I could handle at the time. My original ideas were too big for a small project and focusing on trying to keep it short and still retain the story together to make sense proved to be a challenge. For the next project, I'll make sure to be simple and effective in the elements of the story.

Another issue would be giving my character a good amount of details and not really including those in the storyboard bothered me since all of that work is gone. However; doesn't really take away from the story.

I have an issue of not really understanding how to create a good script with the correct format. I used the other students works as a template and maybe I did or didn't make mine effective enough.
